Narration Skills and computer Skills

Tuesday 21st September 2010.
Today at Brigshaw we made matchware spider diagrams determining where we were going in Leeds and what type of questions we are asking our interviewee's. Then in Miss Woffindens lessons we were talking about narration and why it is important in certain films, shows and productions. We noted down these uses and the type of thing it would be used for. This is the list we got:
David Attenbourough- BBC wildlife- Documentary,
Morgan Freeman- March of the penguins- Documentary,
Joseph and his technicoloured dreamcoat- Stage production/ musical,
Pete Vs Life,
Comic strip narrations,
Dr Seuss,
Stardust- Film
and
David Lamb- Come dine with me- Reality Cookshow.

We were given a sheet a couple of weeks ago. On this sheet it explained the narrative form, what tense the narrations forms are (past and present), whether the context is in the first, second or third person. The sheet also tells you a description, the perspective (an example), and the dramatic effect the narration has. For example these are a few types of narration we could use in our film:

Story Teller- Past Tense- Third Person- Narrator present on stage, literally recounting retelling a story to an audience: direct address- "Let me tell you..." or "Once upon a time" - We are being told a story from the past. Abi suggested this one and said that we could use it for our introduction as it would be a good story starter.
Another example is:

Commentator- Present Tense- Third Person- Narrator present on stage, literally relating events to an audience as they happen: direct address- "As she walks through the streets, she hears her name being called..."- The narrator can provide immediate in site into characters motivations or thoughts. I volunteered this one and I said we could us it as we walk around Leeds to describe what the audience is seeing or hearing.
In addition to this I offered two more and these are them:

Here and now- Present tense- First or second person- Narrator relates events to the audience as they happen. The narrator is the voice of the performer- "We go into a room, It is dark, We here a voice..."- This is immediate and urgent. Direct communication, we hear and see things as they happen. Again like a commentator but a bit more personal and immediate.
Aside- Either, Usually present- Third- Changes from audience 'eavesdropping' on action to direct address and back again. Actor steps out of action to narrate or comment. Other performers are not aware of his or her comment. "Hello George old friend!" (to audience) "What on earth is he wearing?"- Can provide insight and awareness of 'subtext': often highly comical. This can be used when interviewing people but obviously not as rude as the example!
Frankie also put in another idea:
Self narration (shared Experiences)- Either past or present: can switch from the third or second person- Performer is both outside narrator and character in the drama and changes from one to the other often and rapidly- " James put down his bags with a flourish and said: (as James) 'How do you do Aunt?' He waited for the inevitable reply." Again  Good for interviewing.
And with Mr Romer we Then were editing our films and putting bits of it together.

Thursday 23rd September 2010
Today at temple moor we were with Mr Gardener editing pictures and making moodboards. We made two and they had to be about two different media types. I did photography and sound. I was quite proud with my finished results and I am enjoying this diploma tremendously.

Using a camera.

Thursday 16th September 2010

Today we were located at Temple Moor High School. We had both lessons with Miss Pawinski today. In these lessons we were looking at how photographers use the camera and the angles they use. Once we had researched this we were given a camera in pairs and asked to go around the school taking pictures of either the building or each other. In these pictures we had to use the techniques that we had learnt. Some of the techniques included: Extreme Long Shots, Eye Level Shots, Long Shots, High Angled Shots, Low Angled Shots and Medium Close ups ect... Once we had taken the pictures, we edited some of them, told everyone our favourites and printed them out.

Interviewing skills and using a flip camera.

Tuesday 14th September 2010,
Today in period 1 we were in music room 3 with Mr Truscott on the computers. We had to reasearch music venues and save the name and address in our reasearch folder. After this we wrote down all about Audiences using Microsoft OneNote which I had never used before. We then went to Mr Romer in S9 and had to find 4 venues we are going to check out. One is a Music Concert venue, another is a Theatre Prodution venue, one is a radio and television venue and the other is a Art exhibition. I said I would find out if we could go to a fashion show. We looked for these venues because we are going to interview the team at these certain places for our film about creative Leeds. Then in Miss Woffindon's lesson we watched several you tube clips of Johnothan Ross. We saw him interviewing Lady Gaga and Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson. I jotted down notes about his interviewing skills and techniques to help us with ours. The notes I wrote down are:
He shows warmth as he introduces/ greets his guests, He is a very good active listener (nodding, smiling, expressions ect...), He gives eye contact and tries to intigate conversations when the guests are a little more nervous about answering, He ,akes jokes to engage the guest and to keep the balance of who is speaking flowing, He asks open answers so the guest is more open to his and tells him more, He makes sure he knows all the infromation about who he is interviewing, He is very honest and speaks his mind which makes him quite brave as you don't know how the guest will react, He adapts his style to the type of person he is interviewing. He also knows when to finish the interview. He tells the audience as much as he can and he uses props, backgrounds, pictures, video clips ect... to set the scene and context.
We then made these into a table with a yes/no collum, a marks /10 collum and a explanation collum. We then went and redid our interviews after watching them to improve on mistakes, sound quality ect... Whilst watching the video clips we had to fill in our table and evaluate the person interviewing you. This will really help me when I come to do our actual interview with someone in leeds. I will ue techniques learnt from Johnothan Ross and hopefull be very successfull. Last period we were with Mr Romer again editing the videos we had made. Also we planned a route round the school in you pair or three. We then recorded all of this and then sped it up, slowed it down, added text, added music ect... I found today really helpful in every lesson.

Creative Media Diploma

Tuesday 7th September 2010.
Today I arrived at school and made my way down to the music block where my first lesson (the diploma) started. When I was there I was introduced to a new student called Jack who attends Temple Moor High School. He also chose to do the diploma but was the only student from his school to do it, so in that respect I think he is very brave because I wouldn't have the guts to do it. Then we split into 2 groups and the first group showed Jack around the Silkstone building of our school. While they where gone we helped Mr Truscott unpack some ukulele's take off the tags and start tuning them. Soon the group arrived and it was our turn to take Jack around the DeLacy building and sports block. We had a flip video camera to record our tour of the school. Once we had finished we went back to the classroom and learnt how to play some notes on the ukulele's, (once they were tuned). Then we went to period 2 where we were in the computer suite with Mr Romer. In this class we had to find out about Leeds and the events that take place in Leeds. We had to copy our information e.g. Venue, Address, Date, Genre ect... and place them on a table previously made for us. The Genre's were things like, art, drama, music, DJ, film, exhibition, fashion and many more. The types of events we recorded were music festivals, theatre productions, fashion shows, radio stations and any more we could find. After this and after form time and break it was period 3 and we then went over to the PE classroom to have a double lesson with Miss Woffinden. In these lessons we were put into pairs, in my case a three and listen to the other person/s in your group as they spoke about themselves in turn and you had to make notes as they were speaking about what they said. We took it in turns to speak and we spoke about our life, how we enjoyed creative media, what made us choose this, background information, your parents views on your choice and anything else that related to this topic. We then re-read the information we had noted down, back to our partner/s to make sure our notes were right and that we hadn't missed anything out. Once we were finished with this, we gathered round a table and discussed how we got on with that exercise. We wrote down whether we found this easy or hard. I volunteered that I found some bits quite hard when you still had lots of time left but nothing else to say or no more questions to ask. A few people felt this way as well. Seb volunteered that he feels it's quite easy when you know the person quite well, you know what they are like and you feel comfortable with them more than you would a random stranger. I agree with this and I think I spoke more freely and open because I am good friends with my partners, where as in a real life situation I think I would be a little bit cagey and not as honest due to nerves. Obviously I would compose myself but I reckon you still would be able to tell a difference. We then wrote the heading: Evaluating Interviewing. Underneath this I made 4 subheadings with space to write notes underneath. These subheadings were: Questions, Listening, Speaking and Recording. Under these we wrote things we could do to improve or what we found easy. The content of the text was things like; Ask open questions, Make notes, Improvising ect... and the pros and cons to these. I learnt to be yourself when being interviewed or interviewing others. By this time it was period 4 and we were with Miss Woffindon again but in the drama studio instead. Before going to the drama studio we were told to go "on location" with our partner/s. This meant we could go anywhere in the school and make up our interview, discuss how we were going to set it our ect... Once we were finished with this we went back to the classroom to perform our interviews. We watched Seb and Imogen's Performance first, then Frankie and Oliver's, then Abi and Jack's. Each performance was really good each in their own way. Each group adapted the interview differently and this reflected their personalities. We ran out of time to do Emily and Tom's and to do Mine, Francesca and Courtney's. As I was watching I noticed how different people react to different situations. For example I saw that Imogen struggled with nerves a bit (why I do not no because she is fantastic and has loads of experiences with much bigger and nerve racking audiences) because she was twiddling her fingers and playing with her trousers. Likewise with Seb, Oliver and jack as they stuttered a tad. This experience has helped me tremendously. After this we went to lunch. It was now period 5, the last lesson of the day, we were with Mr Romer again in the computer suite finishing off what we started in period 2. Once we had finished we went back to our "on location" site to film our interviews with the flip video camera. All in all I had a fantastic day and Tuesdays are now my favorite day! The time just flew by.
